Every home should have a little medicine chest.
Not a complicated one.
Not a cupboard full of things you never use.
Just a small collection of trusted remedies for the everyday things that come with family life.
The coughs.
The snotty noses.
The sore throats.
The unsettled tummies.
The overtired children.
The frazzled mothers.
Herbs are not about replacing medical care when it is needed.
They are about supporting the body early, gently and wisely.
Here are some of my favourite family herbs to keep close.
Chamomile
For sore tummies, overtired children, tension, teething, restlessness and mothers who need softening.
Lemon balm
Beautiful for frazzled nerves, mild tummy discomfort and emotional little people who need calming.
Elderberry
A winter favourite for immune support, especially in syrup form.
Thyme
Wonderful in steams, teas and syrups when the chest feels heavy or coughy.
Mullein
A beautiful lung herb, often used when there is dry, irritated coughing.
Nettle
Mineral-rich and deeply nourishing. A wonderful everyday infusion for mothers.
Calendula
For skin, baths, balms and gentle healing.
Ginger
Warming, digestive, circulatory and beautiful in winter teas.
Marshmallow root
Cooling and soothing for dry throats, irritated digestion and tender tissues.
The secret is not having hundreds of herbs.
It is knowing a few well.
Know how to make a tea.
Know how to make a syrup.
Know how to make a steam.
Know when to use honey.
Know when to call the doctor.
That is the real medicine chest.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Just knowledge, warmth and a few trusted plant allies.
Because caring for a family does not always need to feel overwhelming.
Sometimes it begins with a kettle, a spoon of honey and a mother who remembers that nature still knows how to help.
