5 Nutrient Deficiencies Almost Every Mother Should Know About

Motherhood is beautiful.

It is also nutrient expensive.

Pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, broken sleep and stress all ask a lot from the body. And while every woman is different, there are a few nutrients I see mothers needing again and again.

Not because they are doing anything wrong.

But because mothering takes from the reserves.

1. Iron

Low iron can feel like deep fatigue, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, low mood, headaches and feeling cold. Blood loss during birth and heavy periods later on can make this worse.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in muscle relaxation, sleep, stress response and hundreds of body processes. Low magnesium can show up as tension, cramps, poor sleep, anxiety and feeling wired but tired.

3. Vitamin D

So many mothers are low in vitamin D, especially if they spend long days indoors with babies. Low levels can affect mood, immunity, bones and general wellbeing.

4. B vitamins

B vitamins support energy, mood, methylation and nervous system function. Stress, breastfeeding and poor intake can increase the need.

5. Protein

This is the one nobody talks about enough.

Mothers are often surviving on coffee, toast, crackers, toddler leftovers and whatever they can eat one-handed.

But protein is needed for repair, blood sugar balance, hormones, mood, milk production and recovery.

Before reaching for another supplement, I always like to ask:

Are you eating enough real food?
Are you getting protein at breakfast?
Are you having mineral-rich foods?
Are you drinking enough?
Have you checked your bloods recently?

Herbs can be beautiful allies.

But they work best when the foundations are there too.

A depleted mother does not need another person telling her to try harder.

She needs nourishment that is simple, doable and kind.

Start with breakfast.
Add protein.
Add minerals.
Add warm drinks.
Ask for help.

Small things, repeated daily, can slowly rebuild the mother.
