10 Things Every New Mother Needs — And They’re Not Baby Products

Before a baby arrives, everyone asks what the baby needs.

But very few people ask what the mother needs.

And yet, she is the one who has opened her body, rearranged her life, broken her sleep, softened her edges and stepped into an entirely new version of herself.

So here are ten things every new mother needs.

Not another gadget.

Not another onesie.

The real things.

1. Warm food

Food that is soft, cooked, mineral-rich and easy to digest. Soups, stews, broths, porridges, dals, slow-cooked meals. Food that says, “You don’t have to think right now.”

2. Rest without guilt

Not “sleep when the baby sleeps” while the dishes pile up around her. Real rest. Protected rest. Rest that someone else helps make possible.

3. Someone to mother her

A new mother should not have to host visitors. She should be cared for. Tea made. Pillows fluffed. Laundry folded. Snacks brought to her hand.

4. Emotional safety

She needs space to cry, unravel, speak honestly and not be told she should just be grateful.

5. Warm drinks

Tea, cacao, golden milk, herbal infusions. Something grounding to sip with one hand while the other holds the baby.

6. Protein and minerals

So many mothers live on toast, coffee and half-eaten toddler leftovers. Her body needs rebuilding foods.

7. Help at night

Even if she is breastfeeding, she still needs support. Nappy changes, burping, water refills, snacks, settling.

8. Time outside

A little sunlight. Bare feet. Fresh air. A reminder that the world is still there.

9. Touch that asks nothing of her

Massage. Warm oil. A foot rub. Gentle bodywork. Touch that gives back instead of takes.

10. Community

Someone to check in at six weeks, six months and two years. Someone who remembers that she is still becoming.

Baby products are lovely.

But mothers need mothering.

And when a mother is nourished, the whole family is nourished.
