Why You Should be Adding Uterine Massage to your Self-Care Ritual - For Post Birth And Beyond...

Uterine massage is an ancient, natural practice rooted in traditions from various cultures around the world. For women, the uterus is a deeply symbolic and essential organ, responsible for nurturing life, creativity, and hormonal balance. And we are nowadays rediscovering the powerful benefits of uterine massage, both for post-birth recovery and during monthly menstruation, as a means to connect deeply with our bodies and support optimal reproductive health.

At Mother Moon we incorporate very specific herbs and oils into our uterine massage blend, Womb Magic. These herbs can amplify the healing and balancing effects of this practice and each of these botanicals offers unique properties that support uterine health, ease cramps, and enhance emotional well-being, making the massage both therapeutic and a beautiful act of self-care.

The Power of Healing Oils in Uterine Massage

The oils we use in Womb Magic are chosen very specifically. We use castor oil which is a rich, therapeutic oil known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, castor oil penetrates deeply when massaged into the skin, stimulating circulation and lymphatic flow, which can support the natural healing processes in the uterus. Additionally, it helps soften tissues and supports a healthy menstrual cycle.

We also add evening Primrose Oil which complements castor oil’s properties with its high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that can help regulate hormones, reduce cramping, and ease breast tenderness and other PMS symptoms.

Womb Magic Herb Profiles and Their Benefits in Uterine Massage

1. Motherwort: Known as the “Mother’s Herb,” motherwort has a long history of supporting women’s health. It acts as a uterine tonic, calming the nervous system, relieving cramps, and supporting emotional balance, especially during menstruation.
2. Ladysmantle: This herb has been cherished in herbal medicine for centuries as a tonic for the uterus. It helps regulate menstrual cycles, strengthens the uterine walls, and can reduce heavy bleeding, making it a valuable ally for both menstrual and postpartum care.
3. Cramp Bark: As its name suggests, cramp bark is a highly effective antispasmodic herb that relieves uterine and menstrual cramps. Its calming properties reduce muscle tension and are especially beneficial for those with painful periods.
4. Ginger: This warming herb increases circulation and blood flow, which can help ease menstrual pain. Ginger is also anti-inflammatory, aiding in reducing inflammation in the uterine area and alleviating bloating and digestive discomfort often associated with menstruation.
5. Black Pepper: Known for its stimulating properties, black pepper helps warm and invigorate the body, making it easier for the uterus to shed old blood during menstruation. When combined with ginger, black pepper creates a warming synergy that enhances circulation and eases muscle tension.
6. Evening Primrose Oil: Evening primrose oil’s high GLA content supports hormone regulation, reduces PMS symptoms, and nourishes the skin. When used in a massage blend, it encourages tissue elasticity, helping reduce cramping and breast tenderness.
7. Clary Sage: Clary sage is an essential oil that balances hormones, reduces stress, and alleviates menstrual discomfort. Its calming and uplifting aroma also promotes relaxation and emotional well-being.
8. Rose: The essence of rose is both calming and uplifting. Known to open the heart and promote a sense of self-love, rose oil also offers anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, easing tension and enhancing the emotional connection during the massage.

How to Perform a Uterine Massage

For postpartum:

Use the flat of your hand and fingers to gently press and rub your abdomen in circular motions. Press gently on your abdomen, just above the pubic bone, and push upwards, gently but firmly, as if you move the uterus upwards. Repeat this motion 15 times. The massage should last approximately 5 minutes. Best done by your postpartum doula or midwife.

For moon cycle:

Gently massage the oil in slow, circular motions over your lower abdomen, focusing on a soothing rhythm. Take deep breaths to centre yourself, releasing any tension from your uterus. Regular practice, especially during your cycle or post-birth, supports circulation and strengthens your connection to reproductive health.
